Blog Post: Database Sharding

Hi, Gordon Smith, Director of Product Management did a nice presentation at OOW15 on a quick overview of Oracle12.2 database sharding. Oracle’s offering is in Oracle12.2, he did not go into great detail. I do have additional useful information on this topic but don’t think I can share yet because of the NDA agreements I singed for my ACE and Publishers meetings at Open World (just not sure this discussion constitutes a public disclosure of the product). I will share the syntax and examples once it is OK to do so. Gordon did give a nice description of what database sharding is and several databases currently support this massively-distributed database model including MySQL and SQL Server. Sharding is a method of having a widely distributed database across various hardware platforms utilizing a mix of database technologies. Sharding extends partitioning to various distributed databases that don’t even have to be the same database product. The primary focus is the scaling of OLTP applications with e-commerce/mobil/social apps in mind. The applications will access the distributed data in or near their location for reduced latency and possibly regulatory requirements. The secondary focus is SQL across the shards for reporting. The sharded environments can utilize low-cost hardware and not have to share any storage devices. This type of database environment is also high available as one down shard has no affect on the other database services. Dan Hotka Oracle ACE Director Instructor/Author/CEO
